MICHAEL SADLER
Clear
MSI Records
For those who know him well, Michael Sadler is a man of many faces. On stage, the lead singer of SAGA is the natural born entertainer. A professional with more than three decades of experience under his belt, a front man who’s dynamic performances have won him the admiration of millions of loyal fans. Michael Sadler will never let a crowd down. But under the cool, confident and enigmatic appearance lies a more profound side to Michael’s character. A part of him that - until a few years ago - he was reluctant to show. Because it was complicated. And maybe because it was embedded in the most sensitive parts of his soul. With the release of his first official solo album Michael Sadler makes a CLEAR statement.
The most important message on CLEAR is that he is willing to show us the ‘poetry in his soul’, thus providing us with a couple of very personal lyrics. The Welsh born Canadian, who now lives in Los Angeles, has found the strength and inspiration for emotional ballads like I Can’t Let Go and the aptly chosen title track. Also, it becomes CLEAR that Michael Sadler’s contribution to the mighty SAGA sound is more than ‘just’ words and singing. Songs like Who’s Sorry Now, I’m Not The Enemy, Lonely and One Minute show distinct similarities in songwriting, rhythmical approach and use of computer programmed synths and sequencers.
SAGA fans may find the sophisticated production (Thomas Schmitt-Zijnen) a little on the safe side every now and then, but still attractive and recognizable. For one who has never heard SAGA, CLEAR offers a catching and passionate collection of pop and rock songs, including contributions from gifted artists like Marcus Deml (guitar), Lino (guitar), Chris Frazier (drums) and Tim Emmons (bass). The unmistakable highlights of the album are One Heart (an uplifting anthem with African beats and stunning harmonies) and Too Much Time On My Hands, featuring a gospel-like choir and a very, very catchy chorus. A versatile voice, some of his most intimate lyrics ever, clever pop songs. Michael Sadler is indeed a man of many faces. And talents.
